Apple’s new iPhone 16e: Is it worth it?

Apple recently announced the iPhone 16e and the website makes it impossible to really tell what the features are compared to other iPhones. I basically scoured the Internet trying to figure out what the differences are and to make it easy on you, I’ll show you what I found.

Display Comparison

  • iPhone 16e: Features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with an edge-to-edge (has a notch, no bezel) design, similar to the iPhone 16.
  • iPhone 16: Offers a 6.1-inch display as well, but with additional features like ProMotion technology and Always-On display.
  • iPhone 13 mini: Comes with a smaller 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display.
  • iPhone SE (3rd Gen): Features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a massive bezels and a Home button and Touch ID.

Size Comparison

The iPhone 16e is larger than the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone SE. It’s the same size and slightly lighter than the 16.

ModelHeight (in/mm)Width (in/mm)Depth (in/mm)Weight (oz/g)
iPhone 16e5.78 / 146.72.82 / 71.50.31 / 7.85.88 / 167
iPhone 165.78 / 146.72.82 / 71.50.31 / 7.86.02 / 171
iPhone 13 mini5.18 / 131.52.53 / 64.20.30 / 7.654.97 / 141
iPhone SE (3rd Gen)5.45 / 138.42.65 / 67.30.29 / 7.35.09 / 144

Features

Processor

  • The 16e uses the A18 chip just like the 16.
  • The 13 mini and SE use older A15 chips.

Battery Life

  • Up to 26 hours of video playback (similar to the 16).
  • The 13 mini and the SE get about 15 hours of video playback.

Design

  • The 16e and 16 both have customizable Action Buttons and USB-C ports.
  • The mini and the SE use the Lightning port. The SE has a Home Button with Touch ID.

Camera and Price Comparison

ModelRear CameraPrice (Starting)
iPhone 16eSingle 48MP$699
iPhone 16Dual 48MP + Ultra-Wide$799
iPhone 13 miniDual 12MP Wide + Ultra-Wide$599 (discontinued)
iPhone SE (3rd Gen)Single 12MP$429

The iPhone 16e’s single 48MP camera is decent for everyday use, but if you’re looking for pro-level photography, the dual-camera system on the iPhone 16 is the better choice.

Summary

The iPhone 16e is a somewhat budget-friendly alternative to the 16… though it’s really only $100 cheaper. It keeps some essential features like the A18 chip, long battery life, and high-quality display but it compromises by getting rid of the camera and ProMotion technology. Its about the same size as the iPhone 16, so it isn’t really a good replacement for the iPhone 13 mini if you’re into small phones.

Final Verdict

The iPhone 13 mini is still the greatest iPhone created of all time.

Disclaimer: I hate Apple products. I hate being stuck in the Apple ecosystem and I only use their products out of necessity. Also, Windows 11 sucks and I’m warming up to the idea that MacOS might be better at this point.
